You Don’t Have to Be Fully Healed to Be Worthy

What a Carved Tree Taught Me About Healing, Identity, and Growth

A close-up of a tree trunk in black and white, featuring various carved initials and hearts, including 'N+K' and 'LUN', surrounded by blurred foliage.

The scars become part of you. They are proof that you have been living. But they never define who you are at the core.

I took a photo of a tree recently on my walk, one that had been engraved, marked, carved into. The text had been there a while. And yet, the tree was still a tree. Still growing. Still rooted. Still fully itself.

It stopped me in my tracks and I admired it. I was drawn to come closer and read all the details that were engraved. I wanted to know the stories behind these scars that were left on the tree. It made me think of the people that were once here. They inflicted a wound on the tree for whatever reason at that moment. But the tree still continued to thrive even after they left. They left a mark there, but it did not kill the tree.

That image stayed with me, and so did this thought:

We all have scars that became part of us.

In a world where we only see highlights from other people’s lives, our scars become the part we do not want to share. Maybe we feel like they will be judged. And maybe they will, because society continues to push this idea that we have to be healed in order to be high value, worthy, and acceptable somehow.

Hm. I do not think it is that simple.

Plus, what does being healed even mean? Did anyone take the time to actually explain that, or is that just a projection we collectively agreed to carry around without questioning it?

Here is what I know: no one is without scars. Whether they admit it or not. Unless you are a fresh newborn, there is something that sits in you. Something that shaped you, shifted you, cracked you open a little.

So what if we looked at it differently?

What if these are the parts that somehow make you more beautiful, more valuable… not because they changed who you are at the core, but because they awakened something in you that was dormant before? Maybe they gave you a new perspective. Maybe they pushed you to your breaking point and you finally made the decision you had been kicking down the road for too long.

I am not glorifying painful experiences. Not at all. I am simply offering a different lens, one that allows you to look at your experiences not as damage, but as data. As lessons. As catalysts for growth.

Because that is what they can be, when you choose to work with them instead of hiding from them.

I certainly believe that doing your inner work matters. Deeply. But here is the thing, it is never done. We are always learning something new about ourselves, about others, about the way we move through the world, and the way we show up. The work does not end when the scar fades. It does not end when the people that inflicted it leave. It evolves.

That is not a burden. That is the journey.

And you do not have to walk it alone.

This is exactly the kind of work I hold space for at Authenticity to Success. Helping you stop performing a version of yourself that was built around other people’s expectations and start building one that is rooted in who you actually are. Scars included.

Because the tree does not apologize for its markings. It just keeps growing.
